The Detroit Receiving Hospital Emergency Department has a proud tradition of superb patient care with an emphasis on critical care and trauma. It combines the best qualities of a state-of-the-art academic emergency department with human values that result in close attention paid to patient/family concerns and comfort. The department is a national leader in teaching, with one of the oldest residencies in emergency medicine and in research, with internationally recognized contributions to the areas of brain resuscitation, cardiac care, geriatrics and toxicology.

More than 90,000 patients are seen each year in the department, which recently underwent a $26 million state-of-the-art renovation, including many improvements designed to optimize patient comfort and safety. Patients are guaranteed to see a physician within 29 minutes of arrival. The department plays a key role in the early care of patients treated under nationally recognized multidisciplinary programs based at Detroit Receiving Hospital for care of trauma, stroke, burns, and heart attack.
