September 11 and other recent events have made the importance of disaster and emergency preparedness clear. Faculty from Detroit Receiving Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine are regional leaders who have helped pave the way to heightened stage of readiness to manage disasters in southeast Michigan. DRH ED faculty serve as the chairs of emergency preparedness for the Detroit Medical Center and the regional MI-DMAT 1 Team. A faculty member also serves as Medical Director for Region 2 South, one of Michigan’s eight medical bio-defense networks. These bio-defense networks are multi-disciplinary, multi-jurisdictional organizations comprised of the hospitals, EMS, and public health and emergency management agencies located in pre-defined geographical areas.
Detroit’s large population and its proximity to Canada across the Detroit River have led to special attention from the FBI. In addition to an international border and waterway, the presence of the world’s largest corporate headquarters and a major international airport, there are many high profile venues in close proximity, including:
• Cobo Conference/Exhibition Center, which hosts the annual Detroit International Auto Show
• Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers baseball team
• Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions football team
• Joe Louis Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings hockey team
• Compuware Corporation world headquarters
• Ford Motor Company and General Motors world headquarters
• Patrick V. McNamara Federal Building
Members of the department have and continue to provide support for events such as the International Auto Show, the 40th Major League Baseball All-Star game and all Detroit Tigers home games, and Super Bowl XL.
